The bastide of Monflanquin, a short distance from Villeneuve-sur-Lot, is among the handsomest and best preserved in the southwestern part of the country. On the initiative of the Youth and Culture centre, with municipal backing, a medieval garden was reconstructed in front of the fortified church, and various herbs are presented in the alleys, the town's "carreaux". The garden is characterised by a design based on number symbolics, geometrical patterns, and colours which are thought to have prevailed in the period when the bastide was erected.
