GARDENS
OF ABBAYE ROYALE DE FONTEVRAUD
Abbaye de Fontevraud 49590 Fontevraud
On
the route of the Loire Chateaux tour near Saumur, Fontevraud is one
of the largest architectural estates in Europe. The reconstruction of
medieval gardens, which is part of the restoration policy for the monument,
includes variously located plants of the time when the abbey was created
by Robert d'Arbrissel in the 12th century: the Hortus for the vegetable
garden, the Hortulus for the medicinal plants, the Bouquetier, the Verger.
And a garden for technical and edible plants. An ongoing exhibition
next to the Romanesque style kitchens provides visitors with information.
